ACTIONS, INSTALLATIONS, SHOWS, DINNERS, FILM AND OTHER WAYS OF DOING

According to an official survey, here, in Barcelona (it could be elsewhere), only 25% of the population has a salary and/or earnings equal to or above 1500 E (£317) a month. According to common standards and based upon the current cost of living, this amount is the minimum required for attaining the satisfaction of certain well-being. 25% = 1 out of every 4 of us. The other 3, if they are good citizens, try to live in order to pay the bills, and even then can’t make ends meet. Given the situation, we ought to be living in a state of permanent rebellion, but surprisingly, that’s not the way it is. Well-mannered and competitive (our models are sport, game shows, elections: in short, eliminate the opponent), for 3 out of 4 of us the only hope is to replace the forth, and screw the rest! Fortunately, an “art” programme, like this festival, has nothing to do with all this. No, it concerns creativity. Creativity, as daily “behaviour”, has been snatched away from the people, and is now considered a talent of the few. Without creativity there remains no individual responsibility for cultivating a life of beauty: that responsibility is delegated to others; art is now a cultural placebo, a parasitic activity and an ornament of power. When we say that culture improves our lives, are we referring to a pastime, an exercise in style by and for inoperative elites? Artist: an a way of prostitution for exhibitionists?. I would like that INn MOTION was a brief but happy interruption in our mental space and that the festival might breathe a bit of alternative awareness and irony into the uniformity of our ways of feeling and doing, favouring a practical “art” open to influences and which might be a powerful yet imperceptible vehicle for transformation… Otherwise, I’d rather not be.
